Israeli-Palestinian Relations: What Peace Deal?
February Report 2005

(Gaza Strip). – In spite of the Israeli-Palestinian Sharem el Sheikh agreement achieved on the 9th of February, Palestinians continued firing Mortar bombs and Kassam Rockets at Israeli settlements in Gaza strip and on IDF posts in the area.

At around 2 am on the 10th of February, Palestinians began firing Mortar bombs and Kassam rockets in the direction of Israeli settlements and IDF posts in Gaza strip. After 2 hours, 25 Palestinian bombs and rockets had fallen in Gaza strip areas.

During several more hours bombs and rockets continued falling in the Azmona and Morag settlements. The bombs and rockets fell in uninhabited territories. The settlements of Neve Dekalim and Gadid suffered the most bomb and rocket attacks. They fell in the industrial area and on the settlements' greenhouses. a house was directly hit by a bomb in Neve Dekalim, but no one was injured. In addition, missiles were fired at IDF posts in the Kadim settlement in the west bank, no damage was caused and no people were injured.

IDF fired back at the direction the missiles were coming from. Near the security wall that surrounds Gaza strip bomb remnants were identified. Around 8:30 am Kassam missiles were fired from Gaza strip towards the Israeli settlements Gadid and Katif, no damage was caused and no people were injured. Meanwhile, IDF continues to arrest wanted Palestinians. Last night, 2 such Palestinians from Nablus were arrested.

Both are activists in the Fatach movement and they lead IDF soldiers to a hiding place where they hid an explosive device. Another Palestinian was arrested in the Fahma refugee camp near Jenin .in the settlement of Jajlulia, IDF soldiers arrested an armed Fatach activist. These vast amounts of violent bomb attacks occurred after several days of quiet from the Palestinian side against Israelis.

Settlers and members of the right political parties believe that the Palestinians latest attacks on Israelis are proof of the hopelessness of the peace agreement signed in Sharem el Sheikh with the Palestinians. On the other hand, security and military intelligence forces have reason to believe that these latest bombing attacks were done by Palestinians that are oppose to the peace agreement with Israel. Israeli forces also have reason to believe that the Palestinian security forces will neutralize these opposing Palestinians and their violent actions against Israelis.

Based on this intelligence force information, IDF allowed the passing of thousands of Palestinian workers through the Erez Checkpoint, situated at the entrance to Gaza strip. 500 of the Palestinians allowed to pass the checkpoint work in the Erez industrial area and another 1,500 were allowed to enter Israel in order to work legally.

IDF also opened the Tancher Route for vehicles to pass on the road connecting between Gaza and Rafiah. Palestinian security forces are allowed to move freely on this road as well.
