Interfaith groups help lift ban on Christian poster
Muslim and Sikh groups have come to the defence of a church after it was banned from displaying a Christian poster in a library.
Library staff in Sunderland prevented a churchgoer from putting up a sign promoting Women's World of Prayer Day, claiming that it could "offend other faiths". But the move has sparked outrage from various religious groups across the country, with many believing it to be "unnecessary".
Manjit Chema, chairman of Sunderland Sikh Association, commented on the ban, saying that different religions were happily living side-by-side in the city and respected each others beliefs and values. "This is not the way. This sort of thing creates divides and ghettos of different communities. "I would not have found that poster offensive.
Different religions need to learn from each other more and be open ... there is no harm in these religious activities."
The news comes just days after former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey told an audience that Christianity was being marginalised in Britain.
