Scottish church leader attacks Labour's lack of religious values

The Labour government has received a stinging rebuke from the head of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland who claims that over the last decade it has ignored religious values.

It comes after MPs in the area attempted to reach out to voters with religious backgrounds to secure more votes. Scottish secretary Jim Murphy had encouraged a Labour think-tank to "reflect and respect" the importance of the faith vote.

Cardinal Keith O'Brien originally welcomed the acknowledgement that Mr Murphy had placed on religion, before launching into a damning attack.

He commented: "A tangible example by the government over the last decade that it acknowledged or endorsed religious values would also have been welcomed. "Instead we have witnessed this government undertake a systematic and unrelenting attack on family values."

Research released earlier this week said that voters who hold Christian beliefs could determine the outcome of the forthcoming general election.

The study also found that many individuals believed that religious freedom within the UK had been steadily decreasing over the last ten years.
