Society must embrace Christian values on marriage
The importance of marriage in building a stable and prosperous society cannot be ignored by politicians, it has been claimed.
The Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols, has said that marriage remains key to solving the problems that are apparent in today's 'broken society'.
Making his comments during evening prayer in Liverpool, Archbishop Nichols highlighted the vision which is central to the church's teaching, stating the need for individuals to "serve the wider good of society".
He continued: "The stability of our society depends directly on the stability of family life. "This is why marriage, as the strongest foundation for stable family life and the best environment for the growth of children, is to be supported in our country today if we are really to pursue, both politically and socially, the genuine common good of all."
Figures have shown that the number of marriages registered in England and Wales in 2008 was 232,990, the fewest in a calendar year since 1895.
