Christians should help others for Lent

Christians have been challenged to "take something up, rather than give something up", to benefit society and others around them.

The moderator of the general assembly of the Church of Scotland, Rt Rev Bill Hewitt, made the comments during his message for Lent. He encouraged church-goers to spread their Christian views by giving up their time to help others and warning that selfishness leads to "social and moral destruction".

Rev Hewitt continued: "Many people use the discipline of these weeks to give up chocolate or fish suppers or the likes, but I prefer the idea of Lent being a time of [the] giving of ourselves in service to others. "This runs contrary to a culture that suggests that the only thing that motivates people is money."

Meanwhile, other church leaders are calling for Christians to reduce their carbon footprint over the traditional fasting period.

The Carbon Fast gives individuals energy saving tips for each day, including giving up iPods, computers and mobile phones.
