Deep concern over TV's religious coverage

The Church of England (CoE) has voted to express "deep concern" over the coverage of religion by TV broadcasters in recent years. After a debate at the general synod, the decision was made to express the views concerning broadcasters', which including the BBC, ITV and Channel 4's, representations of religion.

Nigel Holmes, a former BBC radio producer who put forward the motion and now a member of the synod, condemned the BBC's coverage saying that the taxpayer funded service was "not good enough". He added:

"Those who find religion to be a valuable part of their lives today always appear to be on the back foot, having to justify their presence, to justify that it is indeed a force for good."

Mr Holmes stressed the need for more coverage of faith "particularly for younger people for whom nothing spiritual is to be found either on television or on the radio".

The BBC received 115 complaints when it appointed Aaqil Ahmed head of religious programming last year, it is only the second time the corporation has had a non-Christian in the role.
