Bishop encourages Christians to look forward
The Bishop of Stafford has offered Christians his views on how he thinks they should live their lives.
Rev Gordon Mursell has said that it is important for Christians to always believe the best is yet to come and challenged individuals to let go of things that do not matter in life.
The comments were made in a letter to churches in the diocese of Lichfield, before he steps down from his post. He wrote: "We keep kidding ourselves that we can go on through life simply adding more and more (things, experiences, memories, qualifications) to our spiritual luggage, without ever having to let anything go."
Rev Mursell did concede that this was a difficult task in a consumer society which values "stuff and acquisitiveness", but he encouraged people to take advantage of starting again no matter how daunting it may be. "
However hard it is to believe, the best is always yet to come," he added. The bishop was appointed to his post in May 2005, after a five-year tenure as the Dean of Birmingham Cathedral.
