Churches urged to celebrate Valentines Day with themed services
Churches across the UK are being encouraged to celebrate Valentines Day with a love-themed service this year.
The Church of England has made the suggestion that its 16,000 churches take advantage of the celebration falling on a Sunday.
National worship development officer, the Rev Peter Morgan, has put together a special service in response to requests from various parishes.
Rev Stephen Platten believes that Valentines Day falling on the traditional day of worship provides the ideal opportunity for churches to focus on marriage.
"I'd like to encourage churches to seize the opportunity to do something special this year using these new resources to show communities their support for marriage," he commented.
Readings recommended for celebration services include Psalm 145:1-8, I Corinthians 13, and John 15:9-17.
The latest statistics from the government show that 270,000 couples got married in 2007, that figure was down 2.7 per cent on the previous year.
