MP speaks up about the stigma surrounding Christianity
A Conservative MP has joined the growing list of public figures who are speaking out against the "stigma" that surrounds Christianity.
Edward Leigh, MP for Gainsborough, described earlier comments by those within the public domain as an "encouraging step forward", highlighting the need for more Christians to stand up and speak out in defence of their beliefs.
He followed statements made by the prime minister, the former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey and BBC radio presenter Simon Mayo, all of whom encouraged individuals to be more open when it came to matters of their faith.
"One hopes that this is a sign of things to come and that the stigma which currently surrounds speaking about religion, especially Christianity, will become a thing of the past," he said.
Mr Leigh, who is chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, last week called for direct government funding to be put into repair work at numerous English cathedrals.
