Importance of family 'should be taught at school'
Children should be given relationship education at school, according to one expert. Jenny North, head of public policy at Relate, is calling for the government to introduce relationship based lessons in schools to help children realise the importance of family.
The call comes after Ed Balls, government minister for education, indicated his wishes to support family relationships more as part of Labour's social policy.
Ms North believes that the government has taken a "big step forward" with there plans and she stressed the need to reinforce the idea of strong relationships throughout life, starting with "support and guidance in schools".
"What we want to see is ideas and commitment to supporting strong relationships through the life cycle. So that's starting with support and guidance in schools for children, including relationship education," she commented.
According to a press release published jointly by Relate, One Plus One and the Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships, the number of marriages predicted to end in divorce by their 50th anniversary stood at 45 per cent in 2005.
