Christians must 'toughen up'
Christians need to "toughen up" and be more "outspoken in defence of their beliefs," according to the former Archbishop of Canterbury.
Lord Carey made the comments during an interview for BBC Radio 5 and also used the platform to call for immigrants who value Britain's religious values to be prioritised over those who do not.
Lord Carey described many Christians as having a placid nature, which allows others to "walk over them" for fear of causing upset. He therefore stressed the need for them to speak out in defence of the values and beliefs which they hold.
In relation to immigration, Lord Carey was not shy of "toughening up" himself, stating: "Just as we should expect immigrants to subscribe to democratic principles, abide by our laws, speak English, support freedom of speech and a free press, so they should also respect the Christian nature and history of our nation with its broad, hospitable Establishment."
Lord Carey was Archbishop of Canterbury between 1991 and 2002, during which time the Church of England allowed the ordination of female priests.
