Christian values appear to be becoming more important to Britons, as research has shown attitudes towards helping those in need to be changing.

According to a survey by the Charities Aid Foundation, one-third of adults in the UK feel giving to good causes is more important than a year ago.

In addition, two-fifths said that having a more compassionate society is a greater priority, with the recession cited as the main reason for opinions to be shifting.

Chief executive of the organisation John Low suggested that the "long-term health of our society" could benefit from the more caring attitude created by periods of financial difficulty. "If experience from previous severe economic downturns is anything to go by, this shift in values may last throughout the lifetime of the generation," he remarked.

However, Martin Bamford of Informed Choice warned this week that 2010 could see more families coming under financial pressure, which could affect their generosity.

one project that our ministry runs provides food parcels for homeless and needy people in Loughborough. Over the last few months, although numbers of those receiving have increased dramatically from 12 per week to over 100 per week, we have also noticed a great increase in the number, quantity and quality of donations from both the Christian and the secular sector. I believe that public awareness has grown and people who have enough to get by on are realising that "there but for the grace of God go I" so are giving more.
