Cooking with kids 'makes them more interested' in healthy food

Parents have been advised to spend time cooking with children, getting them more involved with their own food.

Sian Porter of the British Dietetic Association explained that kids may take greater interest in what they are eating if this tactic is used. A

nd she added that mothers and fathers can benefit from the fact that they know what is going into meals if they prepare them themselves.

Ms Porter also recommended that parents learn how to read food labels, in order to ensure they understand nutritional details and can help youngsters avoid health problems later in life. "Sometimes it is not always clear but if you know what to look for then even if it's not clear, you will be able to zone in on the information that you need," she said.

The comments came after the British Heart Foundation revealed that the tactics used by manufacturers of children's foods high in fat, salt and sugar have misled 92 per cent of mums.
