Christmas 'can be hardest time of year for singles'

Christmas 'can be hardest time of year for singles'

While Christmas is often seen as a joyous time, there are those for whom this is not the case.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Liz Jones - a single, middle-aged woman who does not have children - said people should spare a thought for the millions of people like her, who can suffer during the festive season.

She stated: "We tell ourselves everything is fine, that it's better to live alone than in a loveless relationship, that we enjoy the peace and quiet and the freedom."

However, maintaining this belief can be hard when everyone else seems to be surrounded by loved ones, Ms Jones pointed out. She added that around half a million pensioners will spend Christmas Day alone, while three in five people over the age of 55 wish they could see more of their family.

In order to help people in situations similar to this, a group of four Christian women in the US have set up the Central Mississippi Christian Singles group to allow individuals with similar beliefs to meet each other, the Clinton News reported.
