Debt problems 'continue to rise' as Christmas approaches

More people than ever before could be struggling with debt problems this Christmas, according to one expert.

Beccy Boden Wilks of the Money Advice Trust said that the number of people calling the National Debtline because they are behind with their mortgage payments has risen by more than 15 per cent over the last six months.

Overall, the first ten months of the year saw a 23 per cent increase in financial problems compared to 2008, indicating a growing number of consumers may be in need of support.

"We have seen a continued rise in demand for advice from people with mortgage arrears and we believe that this Christmas will be our busiest on record," Ms Boden Wilks remarked.

It comes despite the Bank of England stating that low interest rates and the fact that unemployment has not risen by as much as expected during the recession mean that fewer Britons are facing serious monetary difficulty.
