Daniel answered before the king and said, "As
for the mystery about which the king has inquired,
neither wise men, conjurers, magicians, nor diviners
are able to declare it to the king. However, there
is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and
He has made known. - Daniel 2:27,28.
God is not the supernatural power behind astrology
but rather it is the supernatural evil power that
is behind the predictions of the stars.
Some will argue that the Bible encourages astrology,
often quoting the Magi who were inspired to seek
Jesus by studying the stars. Here we must remember
there is a clear distinction between astronomy
and astrology. God has nothing against astronomy
because that is studying His creation. The Magi
followed a star they had seen in the heavens,
astronomy, not interpreted the future, astrology.
It is very interesting that when they got to Herod
and asked where the new king was, the wise men
used the Scriptures they had at the time to tell
them where Jesus was to be born.
Scientific
?
Some claim that astrology is scientific,
Astrology was the first science known to man and
the present age is beginning to realise that it
is the greatest, the parent of them all. - A to
Z Horoscope Maker and Delineator, Llewellen George,
1977, p.9.
Astrology claims that the positions of various
heavenly bodies give information about personality,
ac-tions and choices affecting individuals. It
can indeed be argued that drawing such charts
is a science; take for instance the mathematical
calculations that are necessary. However, the
science of drawing a chart showing where the planets
were when someone was born is just the beginning.
The non-scientific part of interpretation is the
main work of as-trology. As such, it is not scientific.
Zodiac
signs
When a chart is drawn, several factors are considered.
Of primary significance are the zodiac signs showing
which area the sun is in. The sign rising above
the horizon, which zodiac sign each planet is
in, and then the relationships be-tween the planets
- certain angles are considered favourable, others
not.
Interpretation
Once the chart is drawn, the interpretation of
the planets showing most prominently can begin.
This is based on the ancient myths and legends
relating to that particular character or god.
Referring to 'Jupiter' does not mean the actual
planet but the legends that refer to the god Jupiter
and his relationships with others. For instance,
Jupiter and Venus are assumed favourable whereas
Saturn and Mars are not. Similarly zodiac signs
refer to a group of stars but the interpreta-tion
is based on legends that could not stand the test
of time and critical inquiry! What you read this
morning there-fore is not what the stars are saying
today but what the myths said hundreds of years
ago.
Unexplained
Questions
Apart from the question of where does the supernatural
power come from there is also the doubt cast over
the credibility of astrology by several unexplained
questions. These include,
· Why do identical twins often live quite
dissimilar lives? Astrologers usually quote rare
cases where there is remarkable similarity but
the majority do not fit into this pattern.
· The light that astrologers are seeing
today left the stars thousands of years ago! This
means that the star is no longer in the position
it is being plotted in, yet no allowance is made
for this.
· Why is the hour of birth so important
and not the hour of conception?
But
they get it right !
There are a small group of specific predictions,
which have startling accuracy. These are used
to authen-ticate astrology and many people are
convinced by these stories. The telling of these
events arouses interest in those wanting to know
their future and trust in the process of interpreting
our chart. Sceptics can pull some of these stories
to shreds but we are forced to admit that there
are some that can only be explained supernaturally.
This is often accepted as a conclusion in itself
but we believe there is another question that
needs to be asked, what is the source of this
supernatural power?
Our look at astrology has led us full circle.
Scientifically we should not trust in horoscopes.
Logically we should not trust in horoscopes. The
only reason anyone puts their trust in their horoscope
is because of its supernatural value. Yet that
supernatural influence is not from God. The deeper
someone delves into horoscopes the more he or
she is opening up to supernatural evil and the
more their lives are affected by the characteristics
of this evil.
