Personality Cults
Some in this group may overlap into one of the headings on the previous page but their main identifying mark is that the group revolves around a strong leader. There are many groups that have their own Guru and would come into this section and then we would have groups such as the Unification Church that revolve around the teaching of the Revd Moon.

Moon teaches that Christ failed because He went to the Cross before creating the perfect family. This meant that there needed to be another Messiah, which of course is Moon himself. Actually, with their teaching of duality, the Messiah is Moon and his wife.

Secular Cults
Freemasonry and other secret societies would be placed under this heading. Although Freemasonry is based on many things from the Bible, especially Solomon's Temple, the effects are felt often in the everyday life of the person if they fall out of favour. This could affect their business and home life and even mean that they are accused of wrongdoing. However, it does have to be said that if a Christian is a Freemason then there can be some spiritual effects because there would be two distinct 'spirits' at work.

Scientology is another group that probably best fits under this heading although more often today they want to give at least some claim to being religious in nature. The basic belief system of Scientology is that man is scarred` from past experiences in this life and in past ones and he needs to be set free. The way to be set free is to take courses provided by Scientology. This leads in many cases to a serious dependency on the Church of Scientology and a very heavy financial commitment. They are basically offering an answer to 'sin' and the shortcomings in your life but no human group can do this. Once connected with Scientology it can often be quite difficult to get out again because of the pressure placed upon you.

Finally, in this category we would mention the many 'feel-good' groups that advertise the way to be free from stress, overcome personal problems or to have great success by using their technique of meditation or relaxation tapes. These can again be harmful especially in the area of emotions and the mind and in some cases even open up into the supernatural counterfeit realm.

We have only given examples in this short article and there are many other groups, probably over 300 active in Britain today. More details on these and all other matters concerning cults, occult and new age spirituality are available at the Reachout Trust website http://www.reachoutturst.org
