Another group that comes within this section is Christian Science. Founded by Mary Baker Eddy this is neither Christian nor scientific but rather a question of healing via mind over matter. Their God is not the personal God of Scripture and their Jesus is certainly not God and indeed is more akin to the eastern philosophy of 'Christ consciousness.'

Christadelphians are far more traditional in their belief and use the Bible but change the meaning of so many of the major beliefs of true Christianity. Their Jesus did not exist eternally as the Bible teaches but rather only came into being when He was born of Mary. There is no Holy Spirit as the third member of the Trinity, neither is there a personal Devil or hell. At death, any who do not believe simply cease to exist. This may be a very comfortable doctrine but it is not the teaching of the original gospel but a poor copy.

An example of a group that brings its own Messiah and special writings would be the Bahai. Their prophet Bahullah would be a further incarnation of the 'Christ' - Jesus of course being another. It is fine to believe in any of the other 'Christs' but today you must embrace the teachings of Bahullah to really be aware of your spiritual fulfilment.

Christian Cults
What do we mean by this? We are talking about groups in which there are clearly Christians but unfortunately they also contain cultish tendencies. This leads to confusion on the part of the members and means that some join without full knowledge of the true gospel; feeling that their salvation depends on being within the group and doing what they say rather than a relationship with Jesus Christ.

The International Churches of Christ is one of the clearest examples of this. They teach that baptism is vital for salvation but beyond that you must be baptised into their church. This indicates their belief that they are the only true church. Staying a Christian means the fulfilment of many works. They would put it that you cannot be saved without being a true disciple but of course they define what they mean by disciple with an emphasis on doing rather than being.

In addition, within this category come groups who hold clear unbiblical teachings or who hold authoritarian sway over the people. The latter are not judged by what they believe but by what they do and how they act towards the people. The moment that you have a domineering or dominating leadership that says you must do what we say without question, you are part of a Christian cult.

Another group in this category would be The Family that are the renamed and modified Children of God. Many of the overt sexual matters have been removed although some still exist and there are unbiblical teachings that border on to the occult.

An example of a group that holds unbiblical teaching is the Word Faith Movement that teaches that after Christ died, He went to hell for three days to be tormented by Satan. This is clearly not found within Scripture as all the Scriptures talk of Jesus going into 'hades' not hell. It is also impossible for Satan to have any hold over Jesus when He has just defeated him at Calvary and proclaimed for all to hear 'It is finished.'
