Advice sessions launched to cut numbers of Brits divorcing

Couples who want to divorce will have to take part in advice sessions with an expert in an initiative designed to tackle Britain's high divorce rate.

The sessions will discuss the impact the divorce will have on their children and finances, similar to a successful programme in Norway.

Couples who decide to continue with their divorce will also be charged a fee if they want the government's help with child maintenance arrangements.

The plans have been welcomed by right-wingers who want David Cameron to follow through on his election promise to put families at the centre of policy.

According to the Daily Mail, a government source said: "Families need to better understand the consequences of family breakdown before it happens.

"There's clear evidence from Norway and elsewhere that this can bring down levels of divorce.

"Apart from what happens with their children, the financial consequences of family breakdown are really significant."

The source added that the government wants to "pull together" experts, charities and voluntary organisations which have a reputation for helping couples overcome problems.

This follows news that Prince William and Kate Middleton will receive guidance on how to have a happy marriage from the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of London in the lead-up to their nuptials in April.
