Legal firm offers Sharia law guidance
A law firm in Scotland has started offering its clients advice based on Islamic Sharia law, it has been revealed.
The service is the first one of its kind offered in the UK and has been met with disapproval from many opponents.
Clients are able to receive advice from a Muslim lawyer trained in both aspects of Scottish and Sharia law in civil law disputes such as divorce and child custody.
Maryam Namazie, spokesperson for the anti-Sharia campaign group One Law for All, commented on its introduction, claiming that it represented an "antithetical" to current laws already in place.
She added: "The civil matters Sharia law decides on here are an extension of the criminal matters it decides on in Islamic states, such as stoning, amputations and so on."
Other criticisms of the move include the fact that the Muslim law appears inherently sexist, with women often not regarded as equals to men.
Sharia refers to the "way" Muslims should live.
