Secular media 'discriminates against Christians'

The media's portrayal of Christians has been criticised by an ITV News at Ten anchor who warned that they are being discriminated against by increasingly secular broadcasting.

Speaking during an interview with the Independent, Julie Etchingham said that religion played an important role in her life, but she was unable to transfer it to her working environment.

She goes on to describe the current state of broadcasting to be "very secular", stating that it can lead to Christians being "discriminated against".

"Religion is an important part of my home life … if you have a faith you are bound to be influenced by it. Would that ever show itself on air? I don't think so," she told the news provider.

This is not the first time that the British media has been lambasted for its handling of faith-related issues.

Earlier this year, senior church leaders voted at the general synod to express deep concern about the deterioration in coverage of Christianity on TV.

Meanwhile, recently the BBC received 115 complaints after it appointed Aaqil Ahmed head of religious programming last year, it is only the second time the corporation has had a non-Christian in the role.
